…Prepare to have the most delicious mouth-watering hot chocolate ever to hit your mug. Swiss Miss got nothin’ on my recipe. Yes, it’s mine. But it snowed today in our neck of the woods and Travis had a late start due to a school delay, and the world looks beautiful, so I’m in a generous mood. I’ll share.
I based this recipe off of my mom’s homemade cocoa recipe, but I added a few things.
Serves 4
Kat’s Hot Cocoa
- 1/3 cup unsweetened chocolate baking cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/3 cup boiling water
- 3 1/2 cups milk
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 1 pinch nutmeg
- 3/4 tsp vanilla extract
- Bring your water to a boil and set it aside.
- In a saucepan, combine your cocoa powder, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Carefully add in the boiling water. Bring this mixture to a gentle boil and simmer for about 2 minutes. Stir carefully so it doesn’t scorch.
- Stir in the 3 1/2 cups of milk and heat at about medium-low temp. You want it really hot {steaming} but NOT boiling! Be very careful, because milk can scorch and it’s about the yuckiest thing in the world when it does.
- Remove from heat and add in the vanilla extract. Stir.
- Serve and enjoy. Top with whipped cream or add a peppermint stick or whatever other deliciously perfect thing you can think of. Of course, this cocoa is so good it can certainly stand alone too.
Stay warm and have a wonderful day!

Stay warm!
We will. We went outside to play in the snow this morning and I bundled him up really good and even put plastic bags on his shoes like you used to. Haha (I hated it!)
Then he came in asking for “chocolate milk” so I made him cocoa and put on “Frosty the Snowman.” It’s been a fun day.
That sounds wonderful.
Reminds me a lot of my mother’s, but Mom’s didn’t use the nutmeg or the water.
For the record, the real stuff, made with real cocoa is soooooooooo much better than anything the stores sell. 🙂
It’s very close to your mom’s recipe. I added the spices and then decided it was easier to make up the chocolate syrup with the water before adding it to the milk.
I cannot wait to try this recipe for my hot-chocolate-loving granddaughter!
I hope you both enjoy it. It’s RICH but it’s so so good. Especially after a day playing out in the snow with a toddler 🙂
