We’re on a short family vacation with my brother and grandparents in Albuquerque, NM for the next couple of days. {I’ll add adorable pictures of Little at the botanical gardens and aquarium when we get home.}
However, I had to tell you all: I opened up my inbox today, just one week after our home visit, and you know what was there?? Our typed and completed home study report!
AHHHHHHH!!!!!!! {Happy squeals} {Happy dance}
After the home study interview is done, your social worker will type up a full summation of your 3-5 hour interview. She’ll include everything you talked about, and if you’re very lucky incredibly blessed, then she’ll absolutely love you and write nothing but wonderful things and put a positive spin on even the less than wonderful parts of your life or personality. {Unless of course you’re a psycho, but then why are you trying to adopt anyway, weirdo?}
It reads as a less than personal legal manifesto detailing your intimate personality, childhood, marriage, and family life. Even your pets will be mentioned in a distant and impersonal way. It’s nothing less than weird reading something written so personally about yourself that reads like a military document. “Mrs. Last Name describes herself as compassionate and joyful. Upon my visit with her, she displayed such temperament.” Similarly strange sentences abound. And yet it’s still one of the most wonderful things I’ve ever read in my life.
The positivity that pervades throughout the impersonal mumbo-jumbo says one thing clearly: Our little family is fantastic, our social worker loved us, and she unreservedly recommends us as adoptive parents.
We’ve “passed.”
I reviewed the document for any glaring issues. A slight typo occurred in which our checking account balance and savings account balance were reversed. Easy fix. I wrote her back pointing it out and said otherwise, “it’s perfect.”
This document makes us legally approved by the state of Texas to adopt. It’s the open door we’ve been praying for since we began this journey. As soon as she fixes the little glitch, it’s done. She’ll sign it, seal it, and deliver it to our agency. We’ll then be a waiting family.
I need to get to work on our family profile!
Thank you all again for your support and encouragement. I don’t know how we ever would have made it this far without our friends and family.
