Kitchen Table Classroom: Art Appreciation, Preschool Style

Teaching kids to love art is simple!

The most obvious way to teach our children to appreciate art is by giving them as many opportunities as possible to experience and create art in various settings and all different mediums. Kids are expressive, imaginative, and creative by nature, so arts and crafts come naturally to them. Art gives children many different textures to explore, exposure to colors, and allows them to practice those fine motor skills that lead to writing.

Charlotte Mason, a 19th century homeschool pioneer, was a huge proponent of teaching children {even very young children} art appreciation. No, this isn’t like that boring class you took in college with slides and a droning professor. Art appreciation with kids isn’t about forcing them to memorize names, dates, and influences. It’s about instilling a love of art in children and showing them the multitude of ways to express oneself creatively. Continue reading

A New Way to See Homeschool

051Up until recently when Little turned 4, “homeschool” here simply meant a designated time of day when we’d stop playing, turn the TV off and read together or play an “educational” game or activity. I didn’t push it and didn’t structure it like school because he was only three. Since he’s four now, I decided to add more structure to our school time in preparation for preschool. Continue reading

Kitchen Table Classroom: Learning The United States

Little turned four 2 weeks ago {I cannot even believe it!} and we had a fabulous pirate party {post coming soon}. We also took a trip to California last week and had a fantastic time together as a family enjoying Disneyland, Hollywood, Santa Monica beach, and Beverly Hills. I have so much to post on! I’m sorry I’ve fallen behind.

A New Routine Continue reading

Kitchen Table Classroom: “Gooblic”

It’s been too long. After baby girl left, we still haven’t had any calls for foster or legal risk babies. Well, I take that back, we haven’t had any calls for kids that were right for us. It’s been very slow and very quiet. Maybe God knew I needed that before diving back into another situation. It’s hard to not feel anxious though. But, in the meantime, things return to normal. Spooky Cute Halloween Crafts

Today we enjoyed watching two little ones for one of my friends, and Little always enjoys when they’re visiting. I knew I would have them all day, so I did not just want to wing it and hope for the best. I’m a planner, and having two more children than I usually do under my watch gave me just enough justified fear to actually plan and organize our day. It paid off nicely. Continue reading

Water Balloons, Paper Tubes, and a Foster Update

I’m sorry it’s been so long! Can I share with you the boring details of why I haven’t blogged? …Nah, I’ll spare you. But on a positive note, I’m graduating in December with my bachelor’s degree in English!!!! All just a couple of years away from the big 3-0! WIN!

But Buggy and I have been having fun in between my classwork. For one thing, we played this fun game:

Kitchen Table Classroom: Week in Review

We’ve made it through our first week of Mommy School! I had no idea it would wear me out so much. I’m exhausted! I shared with you all the activities we did on Monday and Tuesday in my first Kitchen Table Classroom post. We practiced cutting with safety scissors, gluing, painting and coloring. We learned the names of the days of the week this week, talked about all of the great things God has made, and started memorizing Matthew 5:16. All in all, it’s been a great week. Continue reading

Kitchen Table Classroom: 1st Ed.

Yesterday was the first day of school for most area schools in our neck of the woods. Travis headed back bright and early to start marching practice. In some ways regarding our adoption journey, this summer felt like an eternity, but in other ways it seemed to fly by. I’ve been stock-piling ideas to try out with Buggy this fall for the past month or so. I wanted to start the week off on the right foot. Continue reading

Fall 2012 Stay at Home Mom Schedule

It’s been a while y’all! I think I needed a bit of a blogging break. Things were getting crazy around here and I just couldn’t keep up with it all, so the blog had to take a backseat. Actually, my blog got kicked out of the car and tied to the back bumper. It survived, unlike the dog in National Lampoon’s Summer Vacation.
And so here we are again! Continue reading

My 101 Favorite Children’s Books

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I LOVE books. And I particularly love children’s books. They’re beautifully illustrated, they create fantastical worlds in young readers’ minds, and they bring to life valuable life lessons in creative ways. Summer is an awesome time to take on a reading list with your kids, and I thought I’d help inspire you by sharing with you the children’s books that inspire me. Continue reading
